We are now carrying ZO professional skincare

Posted by Rachel Kwall on November 29, 2016

Dr. Obagi has been a household name for many years, and we are happy to announce we are one of the few places in Chicago carrying his new line. The new ZO line is a physician only, dispensed line that can treat a myriad of skin conditions.

The  line is made up of products labeled under  ZO Medical, for a more aggressive treatment plan, and ZO Skinhealth, which is more for daily usage. The line focuses heavily on the use of exfoliation and believes that thru increasing cell turnover our products will better penetrate the skin and in time work better and faster. Most of the products do have some retinol in them so your skin is always producing collagen. There are more gentle options as well  that you can use while pregnant to help with melasma (a.k.a)  "pregnancy mask", and a great hydroquinone that will help with any accumulated pigmentation.

Dr. Obagi has truly designed a complete skincare system to address pigmentation, acne, collagen growth and more. If you are interested or want to chat about what might be the right products for you from this line email me Rachel@mygeldnercenter.com

* This product is not available thru online orders so please email with questions or comments :)

Plump up fine lines with micro-needling

Posted by Rachel Kwall on October 05, 2016

If you follow my Instagram (@beauty_by_rach_) you have seen many blood shedding videos of micro-needling. I know it looks scary but I assure you the results will have you lining up for more.

Micro-needling is a controlled injury that creates microscopic holes on the treated areas. It can be done all over the body and especially on the face, neck and chest. As we glide the pen over the skin we are penetrating the area with a hydrating serum to give you a replenished look from the inside out. Hours later the holes close, and the healing process beings, collagen production is increased exponentially preventing further signs of aging. While the collagen is pumping away you are also getting a light exfoliation on the surface of the skin, improving tone and texture, (it is like a 2 for 1!)

The downtime can be anywhere from 3-10 days but typically you can expect some redness right after that follows with some flaking or light shedding. If you are prone to bruising or swelling let your provider know so they can help you control the downtime if needed.

Xo,

Rach

Ps. The photo is our lovely Nurse Injector before and right after a micro-needling session AND chemical peel. She's actually 104 years old!

Bye, bye St. Ives peach scrub, big girl exfoliation explained

Posted by Rachel Kwall on September 22, 2016

Can you imagine applying nail polish over and over again without removing the prior polish?  Now take that image and apply it to all the makeup and products you use.  Yes, I know you cleanse, but what about all the dirt, dead skin and debris that cleansing alone cannot remove?

Exfoliation is important because it sets the canvas, it aids in absorption of products, unclogs pores, minimizes fine lines, wrinkles and so much more.

If you are new to exfoliation opt for a glycolic serum, glycolic is mighty but more gentle than retinol. Retinol is a great product if you are a seasoned exfoliator. I always start patients in the winter with a .5 retinol a few nights a week, we then build from there. It is normal to have some sensitivity to retinol because of the advanced exfoliation it promotes. Irritations will always subside, just make sure you are protecting yourself with SPF.  If oily skin is your game then a salicylic serum will work wonders at unclogging pores and killing bacteria breeding on the skin.

With regular use you will find that your skin will have an overall brighter appearance and a smoother texture. Fine lines and wrinkles will reduce and become less prevalent with this prevention method. Pores will become unclogged and you will have less congestion and overall smaller appearance of pores.

Whatever method you choose please just please avoid the clarisonic, this is a very aggressive form of exfoliation as well as a breeding ground for bacteria!

Winter time is the best to use a prescription strength retinol

Posted by Deanna Stellato on December 18, 2012

It is hard to decide what to put in your beauty bag!

Here’s what’s in “my beauty bag”

Winter is the best time to step up your at home skincare regimen.  This is also the safest time to book professional treatments with your esthetician so check with him or her before starting any prescription strength product.

Retinol is just about the most popular product on the market these days.  Studies have shown that retinol helps with cell regeneration and collagen production to prevent aging and treats the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Since Retinol is so potent, it also helps lighten age spots from both internal and external factors.  Internal meaning from hormones (melasma) and external meaning from sun (freckles/spots).  Additionally, retinol has the added bonus of minimizing the appearance of pore size, while correcting blemishes associated with problematic skin.  Skin Media makes a retinol formulation at a 0.5% potency with anti-inflammatory properties to diminish some of the redness that can be associated with retinol use.

If MELASMA is what you want to treat I highly recommend combining a retinol therapy with Hydro-Q, a prescription strength skin lightener.  Using both of these therapies together increase your chances of reducing melasma.  If this is your first time using a Retinol, I would advise you to use it 2-3 days a week at first to acclimate your skin to the strength.  If your skin can tolerate everyday use then you can advance onto an everyday application.

PROS

Is RX strength

Clinically proven reduces pore size, blemishes, fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation (brown spots)

Combined with an RX skin Lightener like Hydro-Q, can really improve melasma or sun damaged skin.

CONS

Can potentially make the skin red or pink from mild irritation that is sometimes associated with retinol use

Can potentially make the skin peel, or flake due to the potency of the product

This is a new product and quickly becoming a favorite of mine! For the BIG spender $168

Skin Ceuticals Hydrating B5 gel- A hydrating serum for the penny pincher. This serum is like a drink of water for your skin, hydrating but not moisturizing. The addition of Vitamin B allows the skin to repair itself while replenishing your skins natural hydration. $78

Circ Cell Geothermal Clay cleanser-  A fun and new product that uses a mix of clay and oil (don’t freak out oily skins) to detoxify and purify the skin. The interesting mixture of meadowfoam oil and artic clay allows this cleanser to eat up impurities and make-up that gets left inside your pores, but not dry the skin out in the process. BONUS, this can double as a mask when left on for 10-15 minutes. $40

GM Collin Oxygen puractive cream- An oldie but a goodie, this moisturizer will give your skin a very light dose of moisture but infuse it with detoxifying qualities you can literally feel when applying it. This moisturizer is formulated with anti-microbial peptides to purify the skin while keeping the delicate balance of your oils intact. $46
